Last year was a great season - We made 50+ passes with the Red Demon, and plan on making even more in 2012 Our best pass was a 8.62 @ 168mph in the 1/4 mile, and a MPH best of 170.8mph!! After capturing the 2G AWD record last year, the #1 priority for the start of the 2012 season was to get the cage finished and certified.

Some of the changes to the car for 2012 are:

    1. JMF Drag Intake Manifold replaced with a Magnus Cast V3 Intake Manifold
    2. Kiggly Racing 12 tooth crank trigger wheel, so ignition timing is based off crankshaft position; not camshaft position
    3. STM Front Drag Brake Kit
    4. TMZ Performance Rear Drag Brake Kit
    5. Brake Booster Delete Kit
    6. Hydraulic staging brake
    7. D2 Drag coilovers
    8. GM alternator conversion
    9. AngryAero Front Lip
    10. Front Lexan widesheild
    11. 10 point chromoly cage / chute mount / window net

I'll be updating this tread often with progress as it's made. We just got the car back from the chassis shop so we are going to try and get it together ASAP.

Here are some pics of the progress so far.

Got some updates for you guys -

    • Painted the entire roll cage gloss black, everything else got pained a satin black
    • Installed the new TMZ Performance Rear brake kit.
    • Installed STM front brake kit
    • Installed CNC staging brake
    • Ran custom braided brake lines between the brake master cly. / staging brake / proportioning valve
    • Quarter Master 8 leg clutch installed
    • Port matched the Magnus intake manifold to the head, had a custom low profile TB adapter made to keep the TB away from the passenger side strut tower
    • Installed all the wiring back in the car. We went through every harness in the entire car and eliminated all the needless wiring.
Also had a bit of a setback. After disassembling the Shep dogbox to install a new 2nd and 3rd gears, I found that the 3rd gear bearing was completely destroyed. The input shaft looks fine so all I need is a 3rd gear bearing and I can put the trans back in the car.

Is there a specific reason y'all chose the Kelford 280s over something like the GSC S3s or the Tomei 280s? I'm looking to get tuned by y'all over the summer and I've been going back in forth over the GSC S2s and the Kelford 272s. Feel free to PM me. I will also delete post don't want to clutter up your badass thread. Kelford seems better 5-6500 where the GSC is better 6500-8000k at least for my application. Thanks!

No reason, Ive had those cams for 5 years now and I love them. The GSC and the Tomei would also be good options. I will be trying out some different cams on the dyno this year, ill let you guys know what I find.

How high are you revving it? Sorry for the questions, I have a friend who is supposed to be having you guys build his motor and keeps going back and fourth in I beams or alum rods now for his 1g DSM. He's got a set of GRP's just keeps saying how he wants to drive it on the street, just dint trust the GRP's; he went into long reasoning but it was gibberish to me. Lol not that smart

Derek.. on tapatalk. Because I can.

I revved this motor to 10K with the steel rods. If your buddy's car is mostly a street car, I would go with a steel rod.

What would you recommend if he was more track but still see maybe 2k miles of street time. He said he emailed you guys back about a week ago and didn't get anything in reply to his question. His name is Lewis.

I will say I think he did end up ordering a set of Manley I-beams last night but can't be for certain. Been at his house constantly watching him tear into it more and finish up his rewire. I don't see how you guys can go that deep in a build. Hats off to you guys. Lol

I dont have an email from him, I just searched. Go with a steel rod unless your going to rev really really high.

    Update!!

I've had to put the car to the side for the past week or so, we had some customers cars to finish and that will always take priority over my car.

The car is so close to being started I can barly stand it. Took a trip out to Byron Dragway on Saturday to get the car NHRA certified. It passed, no problem, and got certified to go 8.50's. After talking to the NHRA official, the next step would be to put in a 25.5 cage in the car. It would be adding another 20 or so bars to the cage, maybe next year

    • Assembled the trans and installed it in the car.
    • Modified the clutchfork to work with the 8 leg Quarter Master Clutch
    • Fabricated a 3" hot side intercooler pipe from the turbo to the intercooler (ran a 2.5" last year)
    • Modified a Koyo Evo half radiator to fit in the 2G platform. This included modifing the lower endtank to clear the crossmember, and fabricating custom lower radiator mounts.
    • Modified the upper intercooler pipe to work with the Magnus manifold.
    • Ran all the wiring through the entire car. I also went through every harness and eliminated any wiring that is not needed. (took 15-20 lbs of wiring out of the car)

He's revving 10.5-11k on track days on his s375. He opted to keep his GRP for a back up motor and he said he talked to a guy named Marco at Magnus about his rods holding an 11k rev for the season. He should be buying those this week sometime and said hopefully sending his stuff up for balancing. He'll be emailing you guys again then.

Done being middle man now. Lol Cage looks awesome. I was told a seat cover is required for Kirkey's... Not true I'm assuming?

Done being middle man now. Lol Cage looks awesome. I was told a seat cover is required for Kirkey's... Not true I'm assuming?
Sounds good, we'll keep an eye open for the email. And I have a seat cover, just didn't put it on when the cage was certified.

Hey, Devin. it's lewis (using Derek's profile, we share it, I'm just not active much on it.) I should be keeping in touch with you hopefully by Friday as far as machining. A few things have changed for the motor you will be machining; you will get the alum rod motor probably in a month to machine after this one is done. But I haven't forgotten. I tried keeping you guys up to date. I got the pistons after a long as hell wait though! LOL Again, I'll be in touch man. Sorry for the wait!

    **UPDATE**

I got her running yesterday, it started without any issues and I could not be happier! We only have a couple more things to check off the list before we make our first pass. I'm looking forward to bringing her out to the track soon, and will keep everyone updated

    • Install new Frontline Fabrication rear diff cover (pics coming soon)
    • Install Lexan Front Windshield
    • Alignment and Corner Balance
    • Tune on the Mustang Dyno

I had to make a custom bracket with the correct offset for the GM alternator. I also ran some AN lines from the dipstick tube and balance shaft inspection hole to the catch cans. Here’s some more pictures and a start-up video.
    Enjoy

    Update!!

The car is completely finished and ready to rock!! After being on the dyno once so far, we made a couple of changes and came up with 936 AWHP! Last year the car made 860 AWHP and trapped 170 mph, so we should definitely have some fun with 936 AWHP.

We brought the car out to the track this past Friday night with Joey and his "Junk Box" Evo 9. Joey ended up running an 8.98 @ 167 mph! His goal has been an 8 second pass, and to help him accomplish it was thrilling to say the least. Everything went great with my car. It came out like an animal and cut a 1.3 60ft without breaking a sweat, until the clutch started slipping in 2nd and 3rd. The Demon still went 6.1 in the 1/8 but only @ 89 mph. I’m going to look into the clutch issue this week and have the car back out next weekend.

Some other details I’ve taken care of include installing the Frontline Fabrication diff cover. The machining on this cover is second to none; super nice quality. The cover allows for preloading the differential bearing caps to eliminate ring gear deflection.
I also fabricated some stops for the shifter. I was bending cables, breaking shifters, and bending the shifter arm on the trans last year, and needed to come up with a solution. This way the shifter bottoms out long before the cables get damaged.

Are you using any launch control device such as the Magnus unit? I know Wohler is either using Magnus' unit or another like it. Just wanted your opinion on it if you were using such device.

After having some problems with the clutch the 1st time out this year, I decided to not launch the car for the first pass and just take it though the gears, it got a little sideways in 2nd. The Demon trapped 167mph, the clutch was flawless, and after that I was really excited to make a full pass.

The next pass was my first full pass in 2012. The Demon spun the tires hard in 1st, and I hit the rev limiter between 2nd and 3rd. The car ran 8.48 @ 171.3 MPH.

    More to come, stay tuned!!
    Enjoy

With the weather being so nice this past weekend, we decided to head out for one last track day of the year. We have made a couple of changes to the car since MIR, where we had rear diff issues along with a fueling issue, which made us keep the boost way down (35-38 psi).

The fueling issue ended up being a bad regulator, that wasn't increasing fuel pressure correctly with boost. With the fueling issue solved, I looked into the rear diff issue. It turns out the rear subframe was flexing a lot!! I ripped/cracked the rear subframe in 3 spots which was allowing movement of the rear end. One of the rips is a good 4-5 inches long. At MIR, I meet a new friend that happened to have a Magnus chromoly rear subframe that he was selling at a great price. That seemed to have taken care of the diff issues.

Heres our results from the weekend:
