I'm at a loss, so I need help I'll try to be as descriptive at possible because I know its hard to diagnose a problem over the internet. For awhile now, I've been throwing a P0420 code. I can't figure out how to get rid of it because it is so general of a code it really could be anything. I only developed the code a few weeks after I got the car back from the 2010 bday meet. I'm not out to blame the tune or the tuner again I'm just trying to cover all the info. I was coming home and I was trying to make a stop light when I felt what felt like, a IC pipe blowing off. I limped it home and popped the hood and found nothing. After that, the car never made it over 15 psi and started throwing the P0420.

When I state that it never makes it over 15 psi I mean that when it hits its not steady its almost like the boost gauge needle bounces away. (This is the only way I can describe it.)

So what did try to fix after I got the code ?
    Front O2 sensor,
exhaust manifold gasket ( turbo - manifold ) <- I ended up cracking that gasket in half.
    Intake manifold gasket
Throttle body seals, Throttle body gasket
I removed the EGR and the additional lines that came off the back of the intake manifold.
    Injector seals

I haven't done a boost leak test, I'm building one, I haven't done a compression test either because I just thought of it. I'll do one tonight when I get home.

The only thing I have to offer as a information are the AFR readings:
    When I'm at idle I see it anywhere between 16.5 - 17.9
    When cruising I'm at 14.7 - 15.9
    When I'm in boost 13.9 - 12.4

    Any takers?

If it sounds like you were having the same problem as me, check your plugs.

The 420 code is easy enough to solve your on V7 right? Send me your rom I will activate the rear o2 simulator. Have you logged fuel trims? That will be better information than eye balling the wideband.

I forgot to add that I just changed the plugs on Saturday. I gapped them to OEM spec, that hasn't changed anything I'm using NGK BPR7ES. I was using 8ES recently but I wanted to try to use a step hotter.

I think I have the 02 sim on but I just texted you. I'll do a log and attach it.

I would be curious about your fuel trims with AFR equal to below:

    When I'm at idle I see it anywhere between 16.5 - 17.9
    When cruising I'm at 14.7 - 15.9
    When I'm in boost 13.9 - 12.4
Do you have upgraded injectors? How where they scaled in the ROM? Where they even scaled or did the tuner use the fuel tables to adjust?

Definitely do a boost leak test. If the car was running good right after the tune then something changed on the car. Now if the car was not running good at all after the tune then that needs to be checked. If you want to send me a log and a copy of your tune I'd look at it, def do your boost leak test. Car conditions change. Tunes don't. As far as the code. V7 should fix that no problemo.

I'm running PTE 880's. I scaled the injectors in the rom via the injector scaling setting in the V7 rom and I'm assuming it was adjusted accordingly

Can you PM me your email address? I'll forward you my ROM and I'll log a little bit tonight so there is more info to go off of other than just my typed words.

    Thanks for the help fellas.

Quick update, I figured out what the problem was. I did have two massive leaks: One at the Throttle Body, I had called Chris because I thought the two nipples on the TB were leaking at the base. I was wrong, it was actually leaking from the gasket. I ended up using two gaskets and that sealed up the leak. The other leak was on the hotside of the intercooler. I have a dent on that side of the IC and the bead doesn't seat correctly.
The other problem ended up being the ECU based boost controller is bad, so I'm in the hunt for a MBC. I only figured this out after MitsuMarty stopped by and let me experiment tonight. Either way I'm pleased and at the same time frustrated because I have to keep buying boost controllers.

The boost controller that I was using was a 3 port boost control that is controled via the ECU. I'm not really sure why it failed in the first place but I think I'm just gonna take the cue from Mellon and use a manual boost controller.

Zach, I saw your message and I forgot to reply back, as stated above I'm going to stick with a MBC. If I change my mind, ( which is entirely possible ) I'll let you know.

I just got my Intercooler back today, I had the pipes extended a little bit so I could get more of the 45 degree coupler on so I'll be interested to see how it is tonight after I get everything back on.

    Why yes I do.

Terry if you need an ebc I have one that you can have. I'm pretty sure I still have my oem unit and I don't plan on switching back from my MBC.

Glad you were able to source the leaks. Hopefully my boost leak tester isn't in pieces lol
