Im looking to start building my 2006 evo 9 mr. Right now mods are

    Greddy Titanium TBE
    ETS intake
    Turbo Xs RFL BOV

I want to put the FP red turbo and some cams in. This is going to be my first time putting a diff turbo on an evo and also first time with cams. When i do this do i have to get a new ecu or can i just reflash the stock one and be fine. Also has anyone ever had the greddy 264 cams ? are they good? or should i go 272 for a street driven evo.

I almost cammed my evo 8, 2 years ago but never did and i still have a brand new head gasket, intake and exhaust gasket, would those fit on a 9MR?

Any help would be appreciated and thank you!

You can reflash the ecu. 272s for sure. Anything less on a ix is pretty much a waste. And not greddy. Get gsc, kelford, cosworth, etc. The intake and exhaust gaskets will work but the head gasket won't.

It's the same me. I remember you and your yellow evo too. I live in Kansas city now. I miss the freedom wash days. Are you still out there?

And sadly I sold my evo.

yeah im here. i just got back from japan.

when i do my cams what all should i install with it. Do i HAVE to do head studs, head gasket, belt, and waterpump?

does the evo 8 waterpump fit the 9mr?

Also i heard somewhere the 9mr cams are pretty hard to find an aftermarket cam that will really make a big difference. If i decided to go with the FP red turbo first would i be able to do that and get the ecu flashed and be good with only my current mods listed above. Running like 22psi

Depends on how many miles are on the car. If it's close to 60k or you put a lot of miles on the car in a short time I would do the waterpump, timing belt, etc while youre doing it. If it's low mileage you don't have to. I wouldn't worry about headstuds just for cams. You don't need to do head gasket either for cams unless you want to pull the head.

That being said here's what I recommend if your budget allows (also kinda depends on mileage): get a set of valve springs with your cams. Pull the head and replace the headstuds with a fresh headgasket. Do your timing belt and waterpump (pulleys too). It's a lot easier to do valve springs and water pump with the head out and that way you can knock everything out at one time. You will be doing valvesprings later anyways, might as well do it now. The stock valvesprings don't handle aggressive cams as well as everyone thinks.

There's no difference in the drivetrain between a IX MR vs a GSR except 6spd tranny. The engine/turbo is identical. The cam issue is why anything less than a 272 is a waste of time.

okay sweet. alot of good info right there. i bought the car 2 months ago completly stock. I flew to illinois and drove it back home to virginia beach. the car had 56k miles on it when i bought it and as of today im around like 57xxx. I was told i should due kelford 272 by another local evo owner who works at mitsubishi here. What brand would you recommend. im def. going with a 272 though.

I would absolutely do the timing belt and the rest of your 60k then.

Kelford is good. Any of the brands I mentioned above will all work about the same. I don't really think there's one that's better than the other.

As an afterthought. I'd scrap the red for now, keep the stock turbo, get some injectors and switch to e85. Do the red later if you want. Or if you have the means do it all, but te red wil put you at the limits of your bottom end with e85.

yeah i decided not to do the red right now because of funds. i see im going to be buying alot more for the cams then i planned but the red will come later i guess. As far as e85 this is my daily still so i think im going to stick with 93 for right now.. I am just trying to be a daily driven 360-400whp. Do you think that i will make that much with just
    cams
    TBE
    Intake
    Bov
    MBC
    ECU flash

Also, does the oem evo 8 waterpump fit a 9MR?

I highly suggest doing a boost leak test on that RFL. The second version of those is known to leak pretty heavily.

With cams, TBE, intake, mbc, and a flash, you could see 360-390 at around 25-26 psi on a dynojet.

Evo 8 & 9 water pumps are the same on the inside. Outside there is a bolt hole for the alternator bracket. The 9 water pump is like $40+ more then the 8. As far as I know you can still you the 8 water pump on the 9 though, Biggie can back me up on that.

OP, do you have e85 available in your area or just 93?

I pretty much agree with everything else Biggie has said. Stock IX turbo is a great turbo. I ran an easy 12.00 with my IX turbo, stock longblock, 6 spd & 93 oct. With your mileage I highly suggest getting all your timing belt/water pump stuff done. The 2 most popular cams for the IX are, GSC S2s or Kelfords. I have S2s in my car and really like them. I would suggest doing springs & retainers with both of those cams. I have Supertech Dual springs & retainers in my car and its a nice setup with the S2s. If all your timing belt stuff & cams will be done obviously do head gasket (OEM IX) & head studs (ARPs) too.

I am assuming your TurboXs RFL BOV does not recirculate. Sell it and get one that does. For example, Synapse DV, its a new one on the market but has great result so far.

If are you trying to reach 400whp on stock turbo, depending on fuel & boost, you may have to look into a FMIC & piping kit (Buschur/ETS). I also highly suggest having your stock exhaust manifold ported and look into an aftermarket 02 housing/dump.

You also didn't mention anything about fuel mods. Walbro 255 and at least some 750cc injectors. Not sure if you have a boost controller or not but the Hallman Pro RX is a great MBC. Hope all this helps!

My advise- keep stock turbo, buy uicp, licp, fmic, injectors, walbro 255, e85 and mellon tune. 400/400 all day everyday.

Do not buy 750s. Buy nothing less than 1000s or higher if you want to go bigger turbo in the future. DO NOT BUY 750s!!!!

I put 1000cc injectors in my car since I had stock turbo and I've had 3 other turbos on the car since then...haha...

I only recommended 750s to the OP because it seemed like he wasn't interested in upgrading the turbo for a while after he did all the other stuff and he wasn't sure about the e85...BUT if he goes e85 obviously go with 1000s...

    Alot of good info on this thread. I agree that your best bet is to unlock as much of the stock power and restrictions before even thinking about getting a bigger turbo;

    - bigger intercooler & full hard-piping, from the turbo-outlet to the intake manifold
    - 1000cc injectors
    - intake
    - cam (w/the IX MIVEC, only the intake cam is available, right?)
    - springs, retainers, studs, etc
    - ported throttle-body/intake manifold
    - exhaust manifold
    - ECU tune

With all of these things in place, you'll get great power from the stock turbo...and if you decide to upgrade, your supporting mods will already be in place.
